For our Sociology class, we are doing a blog about the looking glass self and how it effects people every single day. The looking glass self is basically thinking about how others see you. Taking a step outside of your head and thinking about how others are looking at you. Some people have trouble dealing with this because they feel like people are judging them. So check it out!
Whenever I see these messages, it really does make me feel better about myself and realize that everyone sees me differently than I see myself. Its a really good reminder to love yourself the way that you are and not worry about others.
ReplyDeleteI think this particular group is doing a good job at getting people to feel better about themselves. I love reading the little notes left in marker on the mirrors in the morning when I'm getting ready for class. It's a little motivational spark to get my day started. These words of kindness should be spread more throughout our campus. Although our campus is very friendly, it is groups like these that help to create this certain environment. Www.yourebeautiful.com is a good example of the looking glass self because they demonstrate what it is like to see yourself inside and out and how you should always be happy to be you.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I saw one of these "Operation Beautiful" messages was early in the fall quarter. I saw it on the bathroom mirror on the second floor of the Alden library. I was really surprised because at my high school there would never be anything written on the bathroom mirrors, good or bad. But it did make me smile. Lately I've seen them written on the bathroom mirrors in my hall. I like when I wake up in the morning before I do my hair or makeup and see that message. Even if I am feeling down about myself, the anonymous notes always make me smile. This boosts people's self-esteem because once they hear it from someone else (even if it is anonymous) they start to believe it, which is a perfect example of looking glass self. It shows that although some people are too quick to judge based on someone's appearance, there are people out there willing to get to know you for you, which will also help you know yourself.
ReplyDeleteI always make time to read the comments on the bathroom mirror, even if I am in a hurry. At first I was confused by the whole purpose of this, but I began to really appreciate what the girls were doing. I think this is an example of looking glass self because just the smallest things such as reading a comment telling one how they are beautiful inside and out can let that person remind themselves they truly are. It can honestly make a person's day to hear a compliment. Feeling good about oneself can affect how one acts. I think this is why this relates to looking glass self.
ReplyDeleteSince I began school here at Ohio University I always noticed the 'Operation Beautiful' messages that were posted around campus. Every time I would see these messages posted I would take the time to read them. Mostly every time I saw them they would be in the inside of a bathroom stall door or posted of the mirror in the bathroom. Even if you just briefly glance over the message you see taped up it makes a difference. These messages are quick confidence boosts for the day. Although some girls might not feel like it means anything, I feel as though these messages I subconsciously read make a difference in my day to day life.
